Sometimes the daily grind at work can get disheartening. One of the most important things you can do is to find a way to enjoy your work, or at least to make the work hours go by faster with less stress. Staying as positive as possible at work can really make a difference in how you feel about your work hours and your off hours. I’ve found that while it does take some effort in the beginning, once you start making that effort to remain positive, it becomes second nature. Here are a few ideas you can use to start your new positive path at work.
The first thing I started with was just to smile more. Smile at your coworkers, your boss, your clients or customers, just smile! It’s amazing how when you smile at someone, it brightens their day, and they smile back, it brightens yours, as well! After a while, you will find that your small act of kindness will spread and there will be much more positivity all around you.
Another thing I’ve done to keep myself positive and motivated at work is to make a goal to save up for something special. Just save a little of your paycheck each week to go towards your goal. Whether it is $5 a week for a trip to the movies or more to save for a vacation, just put the money aside before you spend on anything else. Put a picture of what you are saving for on your desk or on your computer so that you can see it often during the day to keep you motivated and excited to reach your savings goal. After you reach your goal and you get to go to the movies, get a mani-pedi, or go on your vacation, come up with a new goal to achieve.
Helping others is another way I’ve found to stay positive at work. It may seem that there isn’t much you can do to help others at work, but if you take the time to look around, you’ll see people in need all around you. Does the office secretary seem harried and more stressed than usual? Offer to get her a cup of tea or to take her stack of outgoing mail to the mailroom. Your cubicle-mate drops his file folder full of paperwork? Help him pick it up and organize it. Small acts of kindness can make a huge difference in your workplace.
Staying positive can make going to work an enjoyable experience rather than the usual daily grind that most people suffer through. Do what you can to find those chances to bring a positive attitude to your workplace and you will find that those around you will feel the effects; a new positive atmosphere at work begins with you!
